Many home-based business owners experience overwhelm, lack of focus and yes, even self-doubt.  It doesn’t matter if they’ve been in business two weeks or 10 years, the common challenges remain.  The good news is they can be overcome and it all boils down to three small things.

Over the past week, I had the great pleasure of speaking with three amazing individuals who recently joined my newsletter.

It was wonderful to learn about their past accomplishments and future goals for their home-based businesses.

Although all three were experienced and successful in previous business pursuits, the challenges of overwhelm, lack of focus, and even a pinch of self-doubt were creating a block for each of them. 

Regardless of whether you’re a new home-based business owner, or a seasoned entrepreneur, taking on new challenges can sometimes be daunting, to the point of almost paralyzing. 

The important thing to remember is it’s all a matter of perspective and choice. 

If you are experiencing a self-limiting belief that is blocking your progress, consider the following …

  • What past accomplishments are you enormously proud of? (Don’t be humble here!)
  • What strengths, skills and abilities contributed to these successes?
  • Is there any reason why you would no longer possess these same qualities?

I’m willing to bet dollars to donuts you not only possess those same qualities, but are also wiser and much more experienced than when you first set out to accomplish those goals.

 

If you are lacking a skill required to achieve your goal, is there any reason why you can’t develop it?  If you don’t have the time or inclination, can you find someone who does and have him or her assist?

If overwhelm is creating lack of focus, confusion and a sense of spinning your wheels, consider the following … 

  • What can you say “no” to starting today?   Do you have to respond to every e-mail the second it arrives or answer the phone every time it rings?   Can you create a pocket of time where the phone, e-mail and interruptions are not permitted?
  • What can you delegate, starting today?   Instead of folding brochures and stuffing envelopes or opening your own mail, can you enlist the aid of one of your children or an assistant?  Can you create more time for yourself to work on building and growing your business instead of being detracted by daily repetitive tasks?
  • What can you say “yes” to starting today?  Has someone offered to help, but you choose to do it all by yourself?  Can you relinquish control and accept the help of others?  Hang up your superhero cape and take the heat off yourself.  Others may amaze you with what they can do!
  • Breaking your goals down into bite size pieces.  What do you want to accomplish in the next three months?   You don’t have to carry your five-year plan in your mind every single day.  By all means, know where you’re going, but focus on the immediate task at hand and deal with it only.  Creating home-based business success is a marathon, not a sprint.
  • If you don’t have all of the answers, who might be able to provide them to you?  Doing it all alone is tiring, frustrating and makes for really slow progress.  If you can avoid making mistakes by learning from someone else who has already made them, what kind of time will you save?

I am here to bust a few myths about making it online as serious online business owners. Working online or earning an income from an online business is not impossible, if you’re expecting me to say that, you’re wrong. After all, I AM making money online and I would only be saying I am a big fat failure is I said that online businesses are load of….well, a bunch of lies. They’re not.

It’s possible to find an income online, keep a family afloat, feed children, live luxurious lives online. With the growth of the Internet, anything is possible…so, why not making money? In fact, with just the Internet (albeit, a telephone line, a modem and a computer), you can literally not move anything aside from your fingers and make money every single month! And happily too.  

The only problem is that a lot of people are jumping into the online bandwagon expecting to make money the next week, the next month or the next three months. The ludicrous claims by unscrupulous netpreneurs who claims that they can help people may tons of money (along the lines of six figure incomes) instantly doesn’t help much either! Oh, I’ve had my fair share of mistakes. Took in and lapped everything up, swallowed hook, line and sinker a couple of times. I am sure there are many successful netpreneurs today who would admit that they fell for quite a few scams themselves before and LEARNT FROM IT.  

Well, here are a couple of online business facts for you to digest:- 

1. There is no instant money on the Internet

Now, think about it, on the Internet, everyone is faceless. You don’t know the seller, can’t see the seller, can’t even hear him/her and the only way you know that POSSIBLY someone human is behind all of this is the fact that your email was answered. As an online shopper, would you part with a single precious dime for anything that they say they can deliver without proof? Without testimony that this business is legitimate and won’t run away with your money the moment you click the ‘pay now’ button? 

Nothing. There’s absolutely nothing that guarantees you that the business is legitimate. There’s nothing to assure you that they’re send you whatever they say they’ll send you. So, it’s a business that is loosely based on trust, recommendations from others, honesty and professionalism. With a website, yes, you have a shop online that many people from all around can visit and buy stuff from. But your domain name and the visibility of your website plays a huge role in the success of your online business. how do they find you if you don’t advertise – and free advertising is possible. The problem is doing it and waiting for IT to happen, to hit your website and to bring willing-top-pay customers to you.  

That’s where search engines come into play. You have work hard to helping search engines and directories index your website. Even when you’ve submitted your website URL to all the search engines you know, it’ll take months for them to even list your website. And then there’s the issue of ranking. There are millions upon millions of sites, what makes you think they would want to list YOUR website as the top 10 or top 30 websites for your favorite keywords? 

Getting to the top of search engines take work and some ingenious planning. While it’s possible, it takes time.

The idea here isn’t about getting as many business directory listings as possible. The idea we need to create is about more community within your directory.


I always like using a “saying” I learned from network marketing: “I would rather utilize 1% of a hundred people’s effort, then utilize 100% of my own to market my business.” If you keep this in mind, there is nothing you can’t be successful at.


With that in mind let me be quick to point out that, I am not talking about creating an affiliate program. Those come a dime a dozen and can be bought. What we need to do is create something larger than ourselves. I am talking about taking our directory and improving everything involving people.

For these types of directories, it gets a little harder to create a community people can relate to. This is only true simply because the more broad your audience/visitors are, the harder it is to target your resources.

- Create a blog and use it to feature some new listings within your directory. Maybe even offer a review of some kind.


- Offer the ability to add a logo or image attached with the listing in order to personalize it more.


- Give people the ability to submit more information than most of your competing directories out there.


- Make sure to include a detailed search function.


- Create an online questionnaire on tips to improve the directory. Use these tips right away.


- Email everyone within your directory maybe once a month outlining all of the new listings posted online for that month.


- Make sure to have a “news” page so that visitors can see what’s new.


I think you get the idea now. The whole point is, there is no limit as to how you can expand “around” your directory listings in order to increase the value of your directory online. The more you give back to people, the more they might tell their friends about your directory.


TARGETED TOPIC RELATED DIRECTORIES:


Whether your directory is targeting the local business community or you are targeting the international health community, having a directory that is more content specific will make it a lot easier to create a community based website.


Here are some ways to better your targeted directory:


- Create a forum detailing all of the topics within your directory so that people can discuss issues or tips within those categories. For ex. If you own a local business directory, create a forum to allow local business owners to discuss business related issues, hot commercial real estate properties, special deals on office equipment, etc.


- Create a news section that outlines some local news & events within your community. This will especially help to bring more local visitors to your directory and expose your listings further.


- Offer weather & traffic reports within local community directories.


- Add a feature page where you actually interview one directory member (maybe once a month). This will help people to get more familiar with the members of your directory and it will also help promote your directory. People who are submitting to your directory may only submit just for the chance to get interviewed about their service/product/expertise.


- Add a blog with your experiences related to the topics of your directory. This will help in two ways:


 1) People will be able to relate to you and feel more connected with you.
 2) People will begin to respect what you are doing and may tell more people about your directory since they are starting to feel that your directory is more people oriented instead of just simply getting the most listings in the world.


- Add related tips to the industry. The internet is full of reprint articles for your website. I am 99.9% sure you can find articles related to your industry.
